Ahhh, back-to-school and those last remaining days of summer.
That time when windows are thrown open at night to circulate cool evening air through houses still warm from summer heat.
A time when the skies are beginning to darken earlier, and the neighborhood settles into a peaceful calm an hour or two earlier than it had been because kids are doing homework now instead of playing kickball in the cul-de-sac until Ten at night.
A time when the scents of the neighbor's barbeques and freshly cut grass perfume the air.
And a time when ginormous crickets make a mad dash for the hole in our screen door, and sneak stealthily inside.
Don't get me wrong...there are few sounds as lovely as a cricket orchestra, their stanzas cresting and falling throughout the evening, serenading us to sleep by night.
But when a lone cricket gets inside?
The results are quite possibly the most annoying sound in the world.
A ringing in my ears.
A knife scraping a dinner plate.
Nails on a chalkboard.
A clanging cymbal.
If only he could play Beethoven or Mozart on his little violin legs. Or maybe some Drew Tretick. Or maybe even some older Dixie Chicks.
Something that I could at least enjoy until I simply couldn't hold my eyes open any longer.
Why, oh why, do the crickets that get inside my house choose to mimic the whiney drone of the neighbor's A.C. unit?
From inside my bathroom?
In my left ear?
All the live-long night?
That is not your mate responding back, Romeo!
Auuugggh!

Oh! The sound of a cricket serenade. I am right there with you. There was a time when crickets were sneaking in and would come alive at night, when everything else was dead silent.
Eww, a cricket inside the house is very annoying. And they are so hard to find!
I think the Chinese believe crickets in the house are good luck or some such thing. But then, have you ever heard Chinese music? No wonder they like crickets! I think that possibly crickets do make recordings and sell their CDs in China. Especially in the Steppes region near Mongolia. We have one of their CDs, I'm sure of it. It's one that was bestowed upon us by some VERY MISGUIDED, not to say WEIRD, OFF THE WALL, or OUT AND OUT NUTSO 'friends" of my husband. Yep, I'm sure now that I'm right. Cricket Cowboys. Hey! I've got a great idea! I'll send you the CD, maybe it will cheer up your guest! You don't want him to languish, alone and forgotten, in your bathroom, do you?
I have always hated the sound of Cricket's. The noise drives me batty.
bummer dude. Nothing worse than an irritating noise.
Yes, crickets drive me nuts too. You can just never catch the little buggers. Oh and my decor elements, they're a vinyl stick on. Kind of like those clingy things you put on your windows at Christmas. Thanks for your comment.
That is odd that a whole slew of them outside the window is so relaxing but just one in the room is like someone stabbing you in the ear with an ice pick.
Jiminy Cricket, that pesky cricket still around?
Sometimes I don't mind the cricket noise, er, serenade, other times I kind of tune them out. Easy to do. Or just turn of my hearing aid. Wink.
It seems sneaky little crickets love your home!!! Hopefully he'll find his way out or croak soon. We had two little crickets in our house but I managed to kill them before they could begin their "serenading".
I had a tiny lizard sneak into my room the other night and scamper under my bed. I looked, but couldn't find it and had to sleep knowing that lizard was under my bed - eeeek.
Cute post - have a good weekend, Becky - see you - Kellan
They sound ok when they are where they are supposed to be! Ha! I had one take residence right beside my bed and I thought I would go NUTS!!!!
I love this time of year!!! You described it so well!
I totally googled 'life span of a cricket' to give you hope.
um. there is no hope... who knew they could live a year or longer?
ugh.
ah, time to sleep with a pistol.
