...When you hear the first cricket songs at night and actually enjoy them.
Especially when the littlest family member is the one to bring it to everyone's attention by
You see, in the desert, crickets have a tendency to sneak into houses unawares during the evenings (when screen doors may or may not have been securely shut) lodging themselves behind the stove or some other hard-to-reach place and stridulating their hearts out all. night. long.
Ask me how I know this.
I'll try not to think about that, however, because tonight...for the first time this year, several crickets were heralding Spring.
Outside in the yard where they're supposed to be.
And it was a beautiful sound. A welcome one.
And we all paused to listen to the symphony for a while before dashing into the house and slamming the door behind us to be sure that none followed us inside.
You might also know it's Spring when you've been doing ridiculous amounts of yard work, an ice-cream truck goes tootling by and your parents actually spring for a treat.

"Ahhh, yeah. Dat's what I'm talkin' 'bout."
Which brings me to yet another sure sign of Spring:
Boys covered in dirt.
I think that one is pretty much self-explanatory.
Happy Spring, everybody!

Yes, spring has sprung here in western Washington, too. Besides the fact that I work in the garden center at Lowe's and this means we're super busy (which is welcome, until it gets frenetic), I, Frumpgram, have several hundred baby plants growing in my kitchen and basement under lights. And some are already outside. I do this to myself and then wonder why in the world I actually put myself through this spring trial. I love having the ripe tomatoes and fresh green beans and zucchini and all, but you have to babysit these little plants and watch them almost as closely as a toddler. It makes me tired sometimes just tending them. And why do I always start so many? Do I HAVE to plant every doggone seed in the pack? Am I out of my mind or what? But then, it's fun to share with everyone who likes to grow their own and I guess that being a Lady Bountiful is irresistible to me.
In spite of all these babies crying constantly for water and tender care, threatening to keel over if I fail to notice their wilting, and constant vigilance over their welfare, I want to jump onto a plane and fly down to Frumpmama's to get HER garden going!! I want to sweat over HER yard and kibbitz with HER about what SHE should plant. I do this every chance I get. I'm obnoxious about gardening, really. Or, maybe I just want the ice cream truck experience with that cute little Judah boy.
Great post.
cheers!
Adorable! yes...poor hubby was just covered in yard crud from head to toe this evening when he came in for dinner. As you know, in the Pac NW, you must make hay while the sun shines, so he was out there a lot longer than he'd have been if we were still in CO. 'Course if we were still in CO, there'd be snow.
Enjoy your OUTSIDE symphony. ;)
Happy Spring to you! It's been beautiful here in East Texas. The sun is shining in my window as I type. Thank you for letting me visit while Debbie has been away. I have enjoyed your blog.
All I can say is FINALLY! I'm so ready for the warmth, the sunshine, the stormy nights... *sigh of content*
Spring sounds wonderful, Becky. I have yet to experience one but hopefully, I'll get to do that in the near future. :) i must say, the photo is so cute!!
thanks for your prayers for Nikki. he has a blood condition (beta thalassemia), something he's had since infancy. the fever somehow lowered his immune system so his body was not able to produce the necessary amount of blood for his body and his hemoglobin got lower and lower thus needing the transfusion. although he's doing good now, he lost a lot of weight and i still intend to bring him to his hematologist here in manila. i hope that nothing like this will happen again because Nikki really hates hospitals.
Yay for spring!!!
Hi Becky!
So nice to meet you! Thanks for dropping by my blog and for the great comment. I always love to meet new visitors. As far as the laundry soap goes - yes, you can use other types of soap. The recipe I used said that you could use a whole bar of Ivory instead of 1/3 of a bar of Fels Naptha. I hadn't heard about the others, but I'm new to this myself. Hotel soap is genius, if I might say. 4 gallons is a whopping load of laundry soap - awesome!
I've been reading your blog and really like it. From your profile it sounds like we have a lot in common. My son's name is Isaac, but we had a dog named Judah once. I'm just saying - cool name!
I love Spring, too. It's such a wonderful time of year.
Looking foreward to getting to know you! Pam
Happy Spring! I'm happy to be home and catching up on my blog reading!
Crickets in the house must be a CA thing. I guess... Spring is when they sneak in and keep you up at night. And for some reason you can't find them anywhere...
Cute picture of Judah.
