A Great Way To Spend A Saturday

A couple of weekends ago, we decided to while away a day on one of our favorite family pasttimes.

We all got up early, packed a picnic and set off for the lake.

Our party set up our little spot along the shore, cast out our lines, and settled in for a glorious day of fishing.

Things went swimmingly (sorry, couldn't resist), and Jericho managed to bring in the first catch of the day.

Unfortunately it wasn't of the swimming variety.

Not to be deterred, the rest of the party re-cast their lines and waited.

And waited.

There was a brief flurry of excitement as one of the younger children in our party cast his line...and wrapped it around Jericho who was several feet behind him.

Jericho was not amused.

The women in the group just chuckled...and promptly served lunch.

Because you know a good fishing trip really is all about the tranquility...and the picnic that is brought along with you. Spending a day in the great outdoors, you always work up a powerful hunger.

Especially when the picnic contains items not normally allowed at home. Things like Twinkies and Hostess cupcakes, Capri Sun drinks and chips.

The kids were happy campers.

The local geese, upon seeing that bread was being broken, came to shamelessly beg.

Judah The youngest child in our party kept splashing in the water, and probably drove every goose and fish in the vicinity far far away.

But folks did not seem to mind. They simply cast their lines on the other side.

Of the lake.

That is one of the kids from our party on the other side. (The boy, not the pelican.)

Yes, this lake IN THE DESERT actually had a pelican on it.

Our party relaxed and waited some more.

Wait...was that a nibble?

"I got somepeen!" Judah called, breathless with excitement, and daddy helped him reel it in.

He got something, all right.

A dirty old discarded plastic cup.

Funny, when they told us the lake was recently stocked, we thought they meant fish.

In spite of it all, we had a very nice time.

It was one of those occasions that could almost be classified as perfect...with good company, good food and fun.

Except that just before we were about to leave, I looked over to see this:

Yes, continuing in his rather morbid fascination with dead animals, our little darling (sarcasm intended) managed to find a bloated, dejected trout floating along the shoreline...and was stabbing it unmercifully with a stick.

Oy. So much for idyllic.

That's exactly the kind of R&R I need right about now. Only in my case, it would have to be ice-fishing...which, on second thought, just sounds cold and miserable. LOL!

The pictures are great and Judah oh-so-funny!

That looks like a very nice day. I can't wait for it to be warm enough for outside activities again!

Whaddaya mean "so much for idyllic"?

For a boy, that's as close as you get to heaven on earth, no? :)

The pictures are great, Becky. Sad about "catching" trash, but it seems all too common. You're right though--it was a great way to spend a Saturday.

You guys look cold...what was it...like 50 degrees? It's 7F degrees and the wind is blowing 41-48mph for a wind chill of -20. Wanna trade? lol.

I've got the fishing itch. I can smell it now... Mmmm lol I really love fishing and haven't fished since the summer of 2007.

It was a beautiful day in Cali on Sat. We headed towards the fish too... more along the lines of looking at them not catching them though. lol

Love the pic of Judah relaxed in his chair with pole in hand.

the university here has a research fishery (sp?) and once a month they will allow the public to come out to the stock ponds for some catch 'n release fishing. it's mostly families with young kids that come out, they provide poles, bait - everything but lawn chairs - and then serve a hot dog lunch afterwards. we've been a few times and the kids absolutely love it. they dont' much care what is caught, they just have a great time casting and running around. glad you guys had a great day too!

Ah. Now these type of Judah stories are much less damaging to my sensitive nature. LOVE the walk through the stories with the pictures.

What fun!! Great memories for your family. And would you believe there's a lake or two in Arkansas - a landlocked state - that has pelicans sometimes? Weird, no?
