Basically, you glue a bunch of stuff on a hat, and wear it to AWANA, and there are prizes in each age group for different hats. We always get a great percentage of kids in all ages participation during this particular night, and the hats area always very creative.
Judah has a little toy fishing set with "fithies" (fishies) and the fishing "guy" and a tiny fishing pole with magnetic bait that catches the fish which he loves to play with, so I incorporated those into his hat (temporarily). Unfortunately, he wasn't very cooperative in keeping the thing on his head long enough to take the picture, but you get the general idea.
Jericho wanted something really creative and different. So, having had a little "Safari" style straw hat left over from a birthday party a while back, we doctored that one up to make it look like a Bee-Keepers hat.In concept, it sounded like a great idea. But when we went to throw the hat together in the eleventh hour (a short while before we had to leave for AWANA), I realized I didn't have any white tulle left in my craft supplies, having used the last of it for decorating a wedding cake rack a few months ago.
Instead, I was forced to use the pale pink tulle left over from decorating for my sister's wedding reception. I was careful not to make a big deal over the color, hoping we'd get by with it.
Jericho didn't even notice. He was excited because it started shaping up to look just like what he thought a bee-keepers hat should look like, and he was jazzed that it was so unique.
He was sure he'd win the prize for coolest hat.
Things went along swimmingly until we got to church. Kids kept coming up to him throughout the night saying things like, "You may now kiss the bride." (Admittedly, it did look a little like something you might have seen in the musical My Fair Lady.)
I thought he was going to chuck that hat in the nearest garbage can, but getting attention for his hat was half the fun for Jericho. He took it all in stride, confident after seeing all the other hats that he would win a prize.
And he did win a prize. Just not the one he was expecting.
Ladies and gentleman, here is the winner of the Prettiest hat in the Crazy Hat contest.Sorry, Jericho.
And lastly, my "Harvest" hat.
To my dismay (after all the work I put into it) it was not as unique and 'crazy' as I thought it would be.
Another gal at the church had the exact same idea, right down the the scarecrow (which you can't see in this photo) on top.
Great minds must think alike, huh, Judy? ;o)

I like YOUR harvest day hat better than the other one. ya think I'm prejudiced? Jaricho's hat looks very fetching. I could have guessed it to be a beekeeper's hat. And pink tulle keeps out the bees just as well as white or tan!
Oops, I misspelled Jericho! Did I misspell misspell? My eyes are blurry.. .Time to get off the computer!
Becky - what a fun event and I loved both your boys' hats. The bee-keeper hat is precious and should have won - way to go. What fun. Have a good day. Kellan
I love the hats! All of them!! I think you all should have won awards!
LOL on Jericho winning prettiest hat. I guess that would be a good hat for a prissy beekeeper??
And I still think you look like Rachel whats-her-name. :o)
Okay, I don't get the prettiest hat thing! It was a great hat, but it's totally a bee keepers hat and I don't even notice that the tulle is pink!
That whole I'm so creative that turns out not to be so creative thing happens to me ALL the time. I'm with frump...yours is better!
Both your boys are adorable.
How fun! I love the hats, especially the bee hat!
First of all your boys are so darn cute! Judah would get away with murder in my house with that face of his.
So, I finally am out of my cranky mood from all the smoke and am catching up on my blog hopping. Apparently some of us deal with smoky ashy air better than others because instead of whining (like I did)you have darling pictures of your kids and wrote about Crazy Hat Day.
Lesson learned...well sort of because ya know...that smoke really bugged me. :-)
FrumpGram~Thanks, mom. Mom's are allowed to be biased. And yes, you DID get the spelling wrong on your grandson's name...but since you immediately commented again to correct it, I'll let it slide... ;0)
Kellan~Thanks. And it WAS a lot of fun! Jericho actually loved his hat, in spite of it being pink. He didn't even notice until he got the award for the PRETTIEST hat instead of the coolest.
Jenster~Thanks...I STILL don't see it on the Rachel thing, but thanks for that, too! ;0)
Cecily~Awww...thanks! I suppose it serves me right, having a non-unique hat, getting all puffed up with pride about what great hats we would have. Took me down a peg or two, humility wise. ;o)
I'm a little afraid Jericho might get the brilliant idea to actually USE that hat when poking at the bees nest growing on the fence near the garbage cans...I'll really worry if he heads outside with my watering can filled with a small fire to use as a "smoker"...
Deb~Thanks...I love hats, too. Especially crazy ones. *sigh* perhaps next time we'll hit on one that is a little more masculine for Jericho.
Rosie~Hey, you had REASON to complain with all that thick smoke. Bet your boys were thrilled to have a day off from school, huh? The only reason I even had a posting was because I had to stay indoors as much as possible due to asthma.
How creative!!! My uncreative brain would have just thought "Hey we could go get some of Grandpa's old trucker hats! HA! Thanks for the idea's though, when we have crazy hat night now I'll be the coolest, most creative person there! LOL
And they're all AWESOME! You did a great job! :o)
Brooke~LOL, go for it! Crazy hat night is fun.
Daisy~Thanks. It was a lot of fun putting those together.
Fellow Frump Mama....I just found your blog and I love it!
