The First Day of School Surprise

It's hard to believe our little boy is already a big fifth grader, and that it was six years ago today that we dropped him off for his first day of Kindergarten. *sigh* They grow up so fast!

Up until about five minutes before we dropped him off this morning, Jericho thought he was going to the new school just down the street from us.

When we moved a year ago, it was fifteen minutes from his old school, and in a completely new school district, but because of all the adjustments we had to make with that move, we went ahead and kept him in that school for one more year.

So this was to be the year he began new school. In a new district. With all new kids.

I didn't think it would hit him quite so hard leaving all his old friends. He was bemoaning the fact for the last few weeks of school, and well into the summer. So much, that just before school ended, we checked into it, and found out that we could get an inter-district transfer to keep him there, but we would have to act quickly or his 'spot' would be filled.

The plan was hatched. We decided to go ahead and re-enroll him, just to keep that option open...but kept it a secret from him. I suppose to a certain degree, we were hoping he'd get used to the idea of the school just down the street, as it would have been far more convenient for me. Then we learned that if we transferred him to the local school district this year, because of the way they have things arranged, he would be in three different schools over the next three years.
Then it was decided he would be going back to his old school after all.

We've known for several weeks, but kept it on the down-low.

This morning, after our yearly tradition of taking first day pictures at Grandma's house, Jeff broke the news to him. He was SO delighted!

Hardest secret I ever had to keep!

Wow, that boy is getting big. I love that "cool guy" pose in front of the door. But tell him his grandma (Frumpgram) can still take him on and "whoop his hide"! Judah looks like he's not sure why has has that giant backpack on...it's hanging down to his feet for pete's sake! I hate to think of what you may find in it some day!

First day of school is usually a bit nerve wracking. Auntie A was so cute on her first day. She got a very nice hair cut and I finally like it again after her foray into several colors and many dollars later....She's achieved a "look" all her own. She came home exhausted, mostly from nerves. It's normal to have some butterflies when you're going back to the new school year. Think how the teachers must feel!! More like a herd of buffalo frolicking around in their stomachs!

Great pictures!!!

Last year was pretty traumatic for both my kids - we'd moved 1200 miles away from everything they knew and the first day of school was scary for all three of us. lol

I'm so thankful they've adjusted, but I bet you're just as thankful you had that option open to you.

I hope Jericho had a great first day!!

Let me just say that Frumpgram cracks me up! "Judah looks like he's not sure why has has that giant backpack on...it's hanging down to his feet for pete's sake! I hate to think of what you may find in it some day!" I couldn't hold it in after reading this...

I love this secret Becky! I don't know how you kept it. BTW-your boys are adorable!

"Secret Becky". LOL!!!

BTW Becky - I think you look even more like Rachel Weisz in this family picture than in the other. Truly! Are you sure you're not her??

Secret Becky - LOL!

You do look like Rachel Weitz! I think it's mostly the bottom of the face.

Your oldest is such a handsome young man. And Judah - what an adorable sweetie!

I love that you kept this secret. What a great surprise!

*blushes* "Garsh, ladies (in Disney's Goofy voice)...you all are so nice." I still don't see it, but it's sweet you would think so. I've heard Valerie Bertinelli (back in my much thinner, pre-baby days) and even Geena Davis, but never Rachel Weisz.
Seriously...I'm NOT her, and in my everyday, mom-on-the-street attire, trust me, I would never resemble her.
I still haven't figured out how to get my video clips to my computer, but hope to get our techno-savvy friend Mike over here soon to help me do that. The video clip captured his surprise so well, and would be perfect but for my maniacal laughter.
Don't you just HATE the sound of your own voice on recordings? Or am I alone in this?
